Under the Piano: Feeling the Vibes Image
The eighth annual Beechwood Open, “a summer arts immersion salon” fundraising benefit, held today at the Westport residence of acclaimed pianist Frederic Chiu and his wife, Jeanine Esposito, had a special guest — Colin Huggins. He describes himself as a New York street entertainer who travels around New York with a piano playing selections for passersby. As he does in New York, he invited several attendees to lie down on pillows on the floor under the piano to absorb the inspiration of the sounds. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for

Playhouse Suffers A/C Problems: The Show Did Not Go On Image
Disappointed opening night ticket holders at the Westport Country Playhouse tonight file out after “Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin” was canceled due to air-conditioning problems. Managing Director Michael Barker initially told the audience the curtain would be delayed 15 minutes, then 10 minutes later distributed complimentary water bottles when the air-conditioning still did not work properly, and 10 minutes after that said the performance was canceled. He said multiple elements of the production would be compromised by lack of air-conditioning, including the piano. To a chorus of boos, Barker said tickets could be exchanged for another performance.  (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Helen Klisser During for

Westport police, firefighters and animal control worked together late today to make a mud rescue of a woman and her dog from Dead Man’s Brook near the Levitt Pavilion. The woman called 911 after she said she and her dog were stuck in the mud after the dog chased some birds into the water. Firefighters wearing water rescue gear and using a department rescue boat made the rescue. Neither the woman nor her dog was injured although both needed a good bath. About 125 persons took part tonight in a protest rally and candlelight vigil on Westport’s Veterans Green as part of a nationwide protest of Trump administration detention policies. The crowd was heckled for most of the event by three Trump supporters across the street on the Town Hall lawn. One had a bullhorn and tried to drown out speakers. There were no incidents.
