Paying Tribute to Turk Aksoy

Westport firefighters line up today to enter the Harding Funeral Home, 210 Post Road East, for the wake for Firefighter Turk Aksoy. The 13-year department veteran died Nov.  22 of cancer. Hundreds are expected to turn out for a Sunday memorial service at 11 a.m. at Saugatuck Elementary School, 170 Riverside Ave. Riverside Avenue will be closed to accommodate the mourners.(CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Joey Romeo Out as Concessionaire

Joseph Romeo, who has operated Joey’s By the Shore at Compo Beach for more than 30 years, is out as a Parks and Recreation Department concessionaire. An announcement said Romeo, who opened Joey’s in 1988, has advised the town he will not pay the full rent due in 2019 nor fulfill his three years remaining under the lease. Dedicating the Staples Track

First Selectman Jim Marpe today led dignitaries in cutting the ribbon at the refurbished track and field at Staples High School. The facility will be named after longtime track coach Laddie Lawrence once all the naming formalities are completed. The ceremony took place before this year’s homecoming varsity football game which saw the Wreckers fall to New Canaan 41-21.
