The controversial issue of school start times was before the Westport Board of Education tonight. The co-chairs of the School Start Time Committee, Angela Wormser and Dan Sullivan, presented results of their survey on the subject to board members (See WestportNow Jan. 29, 2004). The board put off a vote on possibly changing start times until next Monday. WestportNow.com photo

  1. I might be talking into thin air about the start time issue.

But let me begin by saying that our reason for moving to Westport in the first place, over a year ago, was so our children could be in the best school system. Everyone involved in the Westport school system is responsible for that great reputation. We need good teachers and administaors to continue into the future,  and should budget accordingly. Who better than the teachers know our children between the hours of 7:30 and 2:15. The teachers concern is with our children not their parents.  I listened to my kids when it came to my opinion on the start times at Staples and CMS.  They want to keep the early time.  They can’t think of a worst thing than a longer school day.  Starting at 8:00 or 9:00 adds hours on at the end of their busy day. And I quote “when will I have time for me”. Longer school days do not work in our house.  I would rather have happy kids going to Staples and CMS, then fight with them at 10:00 or 11:00pm to go to bed when he still hasn’t finished homework.

That’s the can of worms you will be opening up at the end of the day for me with your late start to the school mornings.
