With a large crowd on hand, the Westport Board of Education tonight heard more criticism from parents to proposed cuts in sixth grade French language classes and grades 1 through 5 gym classes in Superintendent of Schools Elliott Landon’s proposed $100.5 million 2012-13 budget. The board will vote on the budget on Feb. 6.  (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

  1. Gym is an essential component of academic learning. It teaches so much about team participation, winning and losing, taking risks etc; furthermore, it provides relaxation and balance and helps children focus and concentrate when they return to the class-room. Study after study prove this. Cutting gym will do a great disservice to the children.

  2. mon Dieu, talk about short terms gains for long term losses. In a country where obesity and diabetes is on the rise we want to cut out physical activities for our youth! We might be saving a few dollars now but we will all be paying for it one way or the other in the future.

  3. Not wanting to date myself, but we hated gym as kids.  And especially, in the older grades.  How much more awkward can it feel for a teen than to have to change clothes amongst other teens.  Now recess….that’s a different story.  Running around at recess I got way more exercise than I ever got standing around in gym class waiting my turn to shoot a hoop or taking a whack at a ball.  More recess!!!  And it’s free!!!.
