Representatives of the developers of the current Westport Weston Family Y building in Westport center today unveiled plans for the property that include retail shops, restaurants, condominiums, and a piazza public space with fountain. The presentation before the town’s Plan Implementation Committee included display of a model of the new 110,000-square foot complex to be known as Bedford Square. Developer David Waldman of Westport estimated the project would add about $100 million in value to Westport’s grand list. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

if the developer, David Waldman, can put together a 110,000 square foot complex in the current Westport Y building, why couldn’t the Y stay downtown in its present location????? wouldn’t 110,000 square feet been big enough for a re-built Y? it seems to me that the town of westport has gotten screwed!!
T of Wspt has been getting screwed for quite some time – the Y pays no property taxes since it claims to be operating as a nonprofit (under the Town’s rules, this means not conducting business at a profit). In fact, the Y charges market rate for the various programs it offers, and is not truly able to satisfy that criteria. Anyway, the fact that this downtown property will now be on the tax rolls post-YMCA means that they can claim the addition of tax revs to the Town where there were none before.
The people that REALLY benefit are those who own commercial property in that area of downtown Westport; they are not interested in the character of downtwon Westport as much as they are interested in the per sq. ft. rent that can be charged. You might even ask who in the current administration has such an interest in downtown commercial space in the area of the YMCA building.
