Jonathan Blansfield, a standout member of the Westport Weston Family Y’s Water Rat Swim Team, today signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) with Northwestern University.

Blansfield is one of three graduating Staples High School students, all swimmers, who have accepted NLI invitations to Division I programs for the fall of 2014.

The others are Verity Abel, who will be attending Duke University, and Ian Rainey, who will be going to the University of Michigan. The NLI is a binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and NLI member institution in which a student agrees to attend the institution full-time for one academic year and receive athletics financial aid.

“We are so proud of Jonathan and congratulate him for earning this scholarship,” said Ellen Johnston, head coach of the Family Y Water Rat Swim Team.
