Teen Records a Record Golf Score at Longshore

A Staples High School senior is the holder of a record for the lowest score for a round of golf by a girl in a high school match at Westport’s Longshore Park. Co-Captain Anelise Browne, 17, Thursday shot a 35 on the front nine from the men’s tees. She broke the lowest score record for a round at Longshore for any girl in a high school match since a girl from Danbury shot 36 about 15 years ago.  She chipped in on the final hole (one of her three birdies) to secure the record, as she led the team to victories over Ludlowe and Ridgefield in a tri-match. The FCIAC East first place Wreckers look to extend their eight-match winning streak Tuesday at home against Danbury, the only team to beat Staples. “I broke her golf bag right before the match after taping her injured toe on her pivot foot, and she’s also nursing a shoulder injury,” said Head Coach Patty Kondub. “But nothing phased her as she was in the zone.” Contributed photo

Westporter No. 1 in Fenway Snowboard Event

WestportNow.com Image
UPDATE Julia Marino, 18, of Westport tonight took home first place in the women’s Big Air At Fenway snowboard finals in Boston’s Fenway Park. The home of the Red Sox was transformed into a snowboard winter wonderland with a 140-foot tall, 430-foot long man-made snow-covered ramp and landing zone covering the area from center field to home plate. More than 75 athletes from 25 countries competed in men’s and women’s snowboarding and freeskiing, part of an attempt to bring the sport down from the mountain and into cities where more people can enjoy it. It gave U.S. fans a chance to get more familiar with big air before it enters the Winter Olympics in 2018 in South Korea.  Moreno is a 2018 Olympic hopeful. Contributed photo
