Staples Boys Soccer Shuts Out Westhill 3-0

The Staples boys soccer team prepared for Saturday’s showdown with Norwalk by downing Westhill 3-0 today at the losers’ stadium in Stamford.

Ross McGibney had two goals, the second a rocket from 30 yards out, while Derek Kennedy added another.

Charlie Reiter chipped in two assists, and Brendon Cristobal helped out on the second tally with a thrilling 60-yard jaunt.

Coach Dan Woog cited Derek Kennedy, Brian Kennedy and Lee Solomon for their “quietly effective play.”

The Wreckers, now 8-1-1, are in action Thursday (7 p.m.) at Fairfield Ludlowe.

Their next home match is Saturday, 2 p.m. at Staples’ Albie Loeffler Field, against 8-0-1 Norwalk—half a game ahead in the FCIAC standings.

Staples Boys Soccer Rips Ridgefield

Sophomore Brendon Cristobal scored the first two goals of his varsity career, and Chris Meinke and Charlie Reiter added solo strikes, as the Staples boys soccer team subdued Ridgefield 4-1 on its Albie Loeffler Field today.

The four goals—all beauties, ranging from rockets to chipped balls—came off assists from Ross McGibney (2), Reiter and Keaton Cristobal.

“Jon Zimmerman was the man of the match at midfield,” said head coach Dan Woog. “His strong play helped us control the pace and tempo.  Once we had that, Jon’s teammates went to work.”

The Wreckers are now 7-1-1. They face a tough upcoming week, with three games in five days.

Westhill (away, Tuesday), is always strong; Fairfield-Ludlowe is Thursday night, while next Saturday Norwalk (8-0-1) comes to town for a 2 p.m. contest.
