Staples senior Alex Lebow eludes a tackle to gain ground in today’s 28-0 Wrecker win over Trumbull. Lebow scored two touchdowns and booted for four extra points. The win was particularly satisfying to the Wreckers whose only loss last year was to the Golden Eagles, 14-0, in the FCIAC’s title game. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) WestportNow.com photo

Westhill Hands Staples Boys Soccer First Loss

In a fast, physical matchup, Stamford’s Westhill High School rallied from a 1-0 deficit today to hand Westport’s Staples High School its first loss of the boys soccer season.

The 2-1 loss drops the Wreckers to 7-1-1.  They start a seven-game home stand Tuesday (4 p.m.), against Ridgefield.

Greg Bachman blasted in a rebound to give the visitors a 16th-minute lead, but the Vikings equalized four minutes before intermission. They got the game-winner midway through the second half, on a header off a corner kick.

“We needed a game like this. We needed to be tested,” said head coach Dan Woog.
