Darien Shuts Out Wreckers 12-0

Bad weather was bad news for the Staples varsity football team as it went down to defeat today to Darien High School 12-0 in heavy rain at home.

It was the third straight loss for the Wreckers (5-4, 3-4 FCIAC)) and second consecutive shutout—something that has not happened since 2000.

Darien’s John Gardner kicked two field goals to put the Wave up 6-0. Leading scorer Nikki Dysenchuk’s touchdown made it 12-0 at the half.

The Wreckers play Fairfield Ludlowe next Saturday at home and end the season Nov. 27 against Greenwich at Greenwich.

New York Times sportswriter and author Jim Cavanaugh of Wilton told an audience at the Westport Public Library tonight that the New York Giants of the 1956-1963 era was ”the smartest football team ever assembled.” “Giants Among Men,” the writer’s newest book, is about the team that, according to Cavanaugh, “made New York City a football town and changed the NFL forever.” The team was comprised of such well known players as Andy Robustelli, Y.A. Tittle, Frank Gifford, Sam Huff, Kyle Rote, Pat Summerall, Dick Lynch and others. Team personnel included assistant coaches such as Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry.
