P&Z Considers Kemper-Gunn House Move Request

WestportNow.com Image
All but one speaker tonight urged the Planning and Zoning Commission to approve a proposal to move the 1890-built Kemper-Gunn House from Church Lane to the town-owned Baldwin parking lot to save it from demolition as part of the Bedford Square project.  Among them were both the Democratic and Republican candidates for first selectman. Lawyer and real estate developer Roger Leifer (at podium) said he was opposed because he said the move would greatly increase parking problems. Several commission members spoke for and against the proposal but took no action on the request from First Selectman Gordon Joseloff. They have until Sept. 30 to act. Decisions, decisions—views of the water, or live on the water. For some people, saving over a million dollars on a purchase price to own a home that has water views is good enough.

According to our local Multiple Listing Service (MLS), there are 50 homes available for sale in Westport that either have a view of the water, or have “walk to water” as part of their description.

For clarification purposes, water can mean the Saugatuck River, any number of ponds, or Long Island Sound. The average list price of these homes is $2,214,723.

Right now, there are currently 54 homes available with direct water frontage of some kind, and they are listed on average at $3,285,767. That’s quite a difference, and it all boils down to a personal preference—whether being on the water is crucial, or the wallet dictates.
