Heartbreak Hotel: Inn at National Hall Set to Close Monday

By James Lomuscio

Westport’s Inn at National Hall closes indefinitely on Monday and like the murals and tapestries adorning its high walls, wallpapered and framed with decorative cherry moldings, certain memories remain imprinted on the mind of Marco Degl’Innocenti, the inn’s manager for 13 years.WestportNow.com Image

One easily recalled is the first of President Clinton’s several visits to Westport for Democratic National Committee fundraisers in 1998.

“We had Secret Service agents everywhere, a guy at every corner on every floor,” said Degl’Innocenti,  a native of Florence, Italy. The streets were also blocked off, and frogmen patrolled the adjacent Saugatuck River.

“We’ve had Clinton stay here, Al Gore stay here, and Monica Lewinsky stay,” he added, catching himself. “But not all at the same time.”

One of the unions, Westport-based Local 371 of the United Food and Commercial Workers, which represents 5,000 workers in Connecticut, gave a 24-hour notice Wednesday that it could strike at 3 p.m. today. The rest of the unions gave notice at noon today, said Brian Petronella, president of Local 371.

Petronella said his group will not strike on its own before Friday. Talks between the supermarket chain and UFCW began at 9 a.m. in Providence, R.I. and are continuing.

“I’m hoping that because we’ve upped the stakes, that the negotiations will go our way,” Petronella said.

Gault Enters Lower-Cost Electricity Business

Gault Energy, whose Westport heating and cooling roots date back more than a century, today announced it has added lower-cost electricity to its energy offerings.WestportNow.com Image

The company said it is partnering with Norwalk-based Verde Energy USA, a Connecticut-licensed Department of Public Utility Control (DPUC) electricity supplier.

Gault Energy’s decision to partner with Verde Energy USA and offer customers electricity signals a growing demand among Connecticut consumers for lower cost alternatives in a state whose electric rates are the highest in the lower 48 states, the company said.

Offering electricity at a discounted rate of 10 to 15 percent below the going UI and CL&P rates, Verde Energy USA said it estimates that a residential customer who uses 2,000 KWH/month will save upwards of $400 per year.

“We can’t take any reservations after March 7 because we are closing,” said an employee answering the phone at the hotel today. “We’re not sure about the plans of the new owners.”

Norwalk’s Greenfield Partners LLC, a real estate investment firm which sold the property to Antares National Hall LLC of Stamford three years ago for $19.9 million, is going ahead with plans to repurchase the property, said a person familiar with the transaction who requested anonymity.

Lawrence P. Weisman, an attorney representing Greenfield Partners, when asked about the possible sale today, said: “I don’t want to say anything about it.” No one could be reached at Greenfield Partners or Antares.

“As of 5 a. m. today we are open for business as usual, thank God,” said Stehanie DiNoi, master trainer.

She said the only areas closed were the men’s and women’s saunas.

Fire investigators said they traced the fire at the business at 427 Post Road East in the Compo Shopping Center to an electrical problem above a sauna. Damage was limited to the immediate area.

Presidents’ Day Sales Under Way

WestportNow.com Image
In addition to honoring the nation’s first president, the Presidents’ Day holiday for many has also become a retail bonanza of one-day sales such as illustrated today on the sign in the window of the Ann Taylor store on Westport’s main street. Presidents’ Day, officially known as Washington’s Birthday, is observed on the third Monday of February.  A common misconception is that Presidents’ Day is the unification of Washington’s Birthday and Lincoln’s Birthday, or that it is a celebration of all U.S. Presidents. Both of these assumptions are false. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com
