Westport March Unemployment Rate 6.2 Percent

Westport’s unemployment rate in March was 6.2 percent, down from 6.5 percent in February, the Connecticut Department of Labor said today.

A year ago, the March 2010 unemployment rate was 6.0. It had been down to 5.7 percent in December.

The slight improvement in March was better than Greenwich’s 6.7 rate, the same as New Canaan’s, but not as good as the 5.8 percent rate in Wilton, Weston, and Darien.

The neighboring urban areas continued with high unemployment rates – 14.5 in Bridgeport, 8.5 in Norwalk, and 7.7 in Stamford.

The 1802 federal-style Sherwood House at 26-28 Church Lane in Westport’s center is on the move. As outlined before town boards last December, developer David Waldman has jacked up the post and beam frame and is moving it between six to eight feet closer to the street. (See WestportNow Dec. 7, 2010) Waldman, who was persuaded to save the building instead of tearing it down, envisions the building as a historic setting for a restaurant replete with gaslights, an outdoor dining area in front and lower level for a kitchen. He said 1,750 square feet on the second floor would be for office space. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com
