According to his wife Laura Papallo Friedman, the closure was a joint decision by the establishment’s lawyers, financial advisors and lending institution.

“It was a regrettable decision made jointly by our lawyers and financial advisors,” she said.

Friedman, a mover and shaker in Westport commercial real estate and the founder of the Westport Downtown Merchants Association, purchased the time honored, yet failing restaurant in 2011.

Phone calls to the restaurant this evening went to voicemail, and there was no announcement that the restaurant had closed.

Friedman’s wife said Sunday that a memorial service was set for Friday at the Cobb’s Mill Inn. That is no longer going to happen.

She said tonight that a burial at Beth Israel Cemetery in Norwalk is scheduled for Tuesday at 4 p.m.

A memorial service is scheduled for St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, where Laura is a parishioner and Friedman was known, for Thursday at 11 a.m. Flowers are welcome.
