Westport Will Accept Tax Relief Applications Until May 15

Westport Assessor Paul Friia reminded residents today that his office is still accepting senior tax relief applications through Thursday, May 15.

The programs are open to homeowners who are totally disabled or who have reached the age of 65 by the date of application.

“Qualified applicants for the state program are those who own their own homes or hold a ‘life use’ title to their home, have resided in Connecticut for one year prior to filing application, and whose ‘qualifying income’ does not exceed $29,800 for single, or $36,500 for married couples,” said Friia.

Qualifying income is adjusted gross income, plus tax-exempt interest and Social Security.

Westport’s local program provides for qualified homeowners (as specified above) either a tax credit with a maximum income level of $55,000 and/or a tax deferral with a maximum income level of $75,000.

With incomes of $75,000-$100,000 homeowners are able to defer tax increase from the previous year only.

Westport’s local veterans program offers $20,000 off of an assessment. This is also based on qualifying income not to exceed $54,800 for single and $61,500 for married. To be eligible for this program, homeowners discharge papers must be recorded with the Town Clerk.

Persons inquiring about these programs may contact the Assessor’s Office at (203)341-1070 or the Human Services Department at (203)341-1050. Detailed information of these programs is available on the Town of Westport’s Web site.
