Westport Signs On to Citizen Complaint App

The town of Westport today took a small step toward allowing residents to use a computer to report everything from pothole complaints to concerns about trees, send in pictures, and track progress on resolution of the request.

The Board of Selectmen approved a technology sharing agreement with the town of Windsor, which has developed what it calls a “Dashboard” application to allow various citizen service requests filed by computer.

Director of Public Works Steve Edwards said the town has been looking at the South Windsor application for more than a year and will initially use it to track public works vehicles through an automatic vehicle locator component.

“I have to emphasize that South Windsor is up and running, and we’re looking to start crawling,” he said.

Edwards said his department receives about 3,500 service requests a year and eventually allowing receipt via the Dashboard application will supplement requests currently made by phone calls, emails, and in-person at his office.

South Windsor uses the application to take requests about trees, illegal dumping, street signs, potholes, mailboxes, dead animal pickup, sidewalks, drainage issues, and other public works-related items. It also posts location of various town events.

Selectman Avi Kaner suggested that bringing in a Staples High School student familiar with computer applications as an intern in the spring might be useful to help implement the project. “That’s a good suggestion,” Edwards said.

He said the Westport Information Technology Department was fully supportive of the agreement.

“They (South Windsor) have a very large IT department, and when our IT department looked at it, they were drooling,” Edwards said.
