The 12th annual Westport Arts Awards Celebration Sunday at Westport Town Hall will honor area residents for their contributions to the arts.

The 2 p.m. ceremony is sponsored by the Town of Westport and its Arts Advisory Committee.

Since 1994, the committee has presented awards to area residents who have contributed significantly to the arts in four disciplines – music, theater, visual arts and literature.

Four members of the Westport-Weston communities—Gerald Levinson, David Wiltse, Stanley Bleifeld and James Naughton—will be presented Arts Achievement Awards in music, literature, the visual arts and theater, respectively.

The Horizon Award, which recognizes the achievements of young, emerging artists with strong ties to Westport, will be presented to Devin Arrington and Ari Edelson. Both are Staples High School graduates.

The Patron of the Arts Award, new this year, is designed to honor those who work quietly in the background to promote and encourage the continuance of the arts in Westport. Its first recipients are Shirley Mellor and her late husband, Max Kaplan, whose Max’s Art Supply on Post Road East serves as a special, central meeting place and art gallery for community artists.

The committee will also honor four persons posthumously—John Hanulik, Reginald Rose, Lawrence Fellows and Robert Lambdin—“whose contributions to Westport live on, although they are no longer with us,” an announcement said. “We proudly add them to our Heritage Honor Roll.”

The free event is followed by a reception at the Westport Historical Society and is open to the public.

  1. Honoring Shirley and Max for years past and current support of the Arts certainly adds to this yealry event that is a reminder of our good fortune to be living in an area of such exceptional people.

As an ordinary person having had long life and contact with persons such as Max, Shirley, Robert Lambdin, Lawrence Fellows and John Hanulik, and with some knowledge of the others being honored,
my own spirit is lifted time and time again by the Westport Arts Award Celebration.
