U.S.-Taliban Agreement: the Westport Connection Image
The U.S. envoy who on Saturday signed the agreement to end the brutal U.S.-Taliban conflict in Afghanistan has a Westport connection. In 2008, Zalmay Khalilzad, then the U.S. permanent representative to the United Nations, attended the annual jUNe Day celebration in Westport as the guest of former First Selectman Gordon Joseloff. Khalilzad had made a private visit to Westport earlier in the year at which time Joseloff extended the invitation. It was the first time in jUNe Day’s then 43-year history that anyone could recall a sitting permanent U.S representative to the United Nations attending the Westport event. Khalilzad, a native of Afghanistan, is a former U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan and Iraq. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for
