Stephen J. Felia Jr., 83

Stephen J. Felia Jr. of Westport died July 22 in Connecticut Health of Southport. He was 83.

He was a longtime resident of Westport where he served his community as a Westport firefighter for 28 years.

Born on June 26, 1929, he was the son of the late Stephen J. Felia Sr. and Mary Lipsay Felia. As an early teen, he developed a love of aviation. Before he was of age to drive a car he had learned to fly at the then Monroe airport.

He attended Bullard Havens Technical School where he studied to become a master carpenter. Shortly after graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean War as a Seabee. After the war, he worked in and around Westport building many houses. He enjoyed helping people fix things and always carried his tool box in his car.

Survivors include his children: Bonnie Felia of Fairfield, Wendie Papageorge of Hamden, Stephen Felia of Florida, and Tim Felia of Westport, their mother Jean Felia of Westport and his sister; Beatrice Sandone of Sandy Hook. As well as his nine grandchildren: Belinda, Angelus, Lucas, Stephanie, Courtney, Natalie, Patrick, Quinton, Melanie and 10 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Clara Smith Felia.

The family will receive friends in the Harding Funeral Home 210 Post Road East. on Friday, July 27 from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be private.

  1. My condolences to my old friend Steve and the rest of the Felia family. I remember Mr. Felia working on their house addition, and taking us to the stock car races all those years ago. I hope that the thoughts from many miles and years away bring you a little comfort.
