Miles, who currently serves as chief operating officer for the humanitarian agency, will be the first woman to lead the organization in its almost 80-year history.

The former American Express executive who joined the charity in 1998 will officially assume the post on Sept. 1 when current the CEO, Charles F. MacCormack, steps down after more than 18 years of service.

“Our leadership committee considered many extraordinary candidates for this position during a nationwide search conducted by Spencer Stuart,” said Anne Mulcahy, Save the Children’s board chair and former Xerox CEO.

“But it soon became very clear to all of us that Carolyn was the right choice to continue our important work on behalf of children in need and to create a new vision for the future.”

Miles and other Save the Children employees honored MacCormack at an Inn at Longshore dinner in Westport on Wednesday night.

First Selectman Gordon Joseloff and former First Selectman Diane Farrell were among those offering words of praise of the longtime executive along with Cathy Malloy, wife of Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, and former Congressman Christopher Shays.
