The body was taken ashore by a fire department boat at about 10:15 a.m., witnesses said. Tonight, police identified her as Annette L. White of Maine, no hometown given, who recently had been staying at a Westport home.

A police news release said the kayaker was a duck hunter who spotted the body floating in the mouth of the Saugatuck River shortly after 9 a.m.

“The hunter who was in a kayak stayed with the body until detectives assisted by the Westport Fire Department launched a boat and responded to retrieve the body,” the news release said.

Police said the body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Farmington and the incident is currently under investigation by the Westport Police Detective Bureau.

Police were able to identify the body quickly and later went to a home in the Compo Beach area not far from Longshore, apparently to make notification, according to witnesses.

How they were able to identify the woman quickly and connect her to the Westport address was not known. Police did not say whether she had an ID or perhaps a note that helped them make the connection.

Police did say there was no indication of foul play and that they were checking on her activities Thursday night, suggesting she had not been in the water for an extended period. Temperatures overnight dipped into the teens.

They said they had no reports of a missing person.

Police initially responded to Hendricks Point at Longshore Club Park but relocated to the Saugatuck Harbor Yacht Club when it became apparent the kayaker was closer to that side of the water.

The kayaker notified police via a cell phone and told them he was off of Longshore. But the current carried the body to Saugatuck Shores in the area of the yacht club.
