Phyllis M. McCoy, 93

Phyllis Maisel McCoy of Charleston, S.C., a former Westport resident, died Aug. 15. She was 93.

She was born on June 1, 1923 in Philadelphia, and was one of four children of Ernest and Elsie Weinman Maisel. She graduated from Beaver College (now known as Arcadia University) in Glenside, Pa. in 1945 and obtained a master’s degree in education from Fairfield University in 1960.

She met her husband Bob (Penn State ‘43) on a blind date at a prom at Beaver. They were married in August 1945, and raised four children, moving from New Jersey to Westport in 1956.

She moved from Westport to a retirement home in Charleston in 2011.

She was known for her remarkable energy and intellectual curiosity throughout her long life. She enjoyed an active career teaching home economics for over 20 years in Westport, first at Bedford and later at Coleytown Junior High School.

She loved tennis, cooking, gardening, sailing on Long Island Sound and especially traveling with her family. She had a special passion for skiing and was fortunate to continue doing so until age 88. She even went to Europe on a ski trip with the Top Notch Ski Club at age 85.

She is survived by her four children, Brian McCoy (Cindy) of Sun Valley, Idaho, Douglas McCoy (Danny) of Charleston, S.C., Diane McCoy Murray (Chris) of Westport, and Steven McCoy (Sher) of Litchfield; her brother John Maisel of Gaithersburg, Md.; grandsons Alex McCoy of Boise, Idaho, Christopher McCoy of Brooklyn, N.Y., Rob McCoy of Fairport, N.Y., and Chip McCoy of Dallas, Texas, and granddaughter Meredith McCoy of Washington, D.C.; and great-granddaughters Catherine McCoy and Elizabeth McCoy of Boise. She was predeceased by her husband Bob McCoy to whom she was married for 57 years, her brother Dixon Maisel and her sister Arlene Maisel.

There will be a memorial service on Thursday, Oct 6 at 2 p.m. at the Greens Farms Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her memory to Greens Farms Congregational Church, 71 Hillandale Road, Westport, CT 06880.
