Following today’s announcement that President Trump is appointing Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, U.S.. Sen. Richard Blumenthal said he would oppose her nomination.

“I will oppose the confirmation of Judge Amy Coney Barrett, as I would any nominee proposed as part of this illegitimate sham process, barely one month before an election as Americans are already casting their votes,” he said in a statement. “The American people deserve a voice in this hugely consequential decision.”

“Judge Barrett’s views would harm real lives—real people—in real ways, from children with pre-existing conditions to women who just want to be able to decide when and how to have a family. I’m fighting for them.”

He added “I refuse to treat this process as legitimate and will not meet with Judge Barrett.”

Blumenthal’s statement came two days after Westporters paid tribute to the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg..

More than 80 people gathered at a socially safe distance in the parking lot of The Unitarian Church in Westport for the event.

Vigil organizer and congregant Beth Cliff welcomed the group, opening with Maya Angelou’s moving poem “When Great Trees Fall” which Angelou wrote after MLK Jr.‘s assassination.

Unitarian Church Intern Minister Kim Warman offered a prayer before an extended period of candle lit silence followed by the singing of “Spirit of Life”.

A number of people in attendance, unable to travel to Washington, D.C. to pay their last respects to Ginsberg, expressed that they felt the need to come together in community to say farewell to the unparalleled advocate for gender equality and women’s rights.
