A smashed fire hydrant and broken slow down sign were about the only recognizable objects left today after a one-vehicle crash on North Avenue near No. 197. A Fairfield woman managed to escape the 1:26 a.m. crash. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Contributed photos

Finally, Staples Boys Soccer Begins
At long last, the shortened Staples boys soccer season began. Danbury edged the Wreckers 2-1 at Loeffler Field Friday. But this year, in a home-and-home format with only six teams in Staples’ division, Staples seek revenge on Monday at Danbury. Reese Watkins scored for the Westporters. Haydn Siroka (photo) had several solid chances on goal. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Drew Douglas for WestportNow.com

Westport COVID-19 Cases, Deaths Unchanged
The state said today its Westport COVID-19 case count was unchanged at 380 (364 confirmed and 16 probable) and deaths also unchanged at 23.
The state today reported 460 new coronavirus cases, plus an additional 95 cases that were added as part of “catch-up reporting.” With those 95 cases — which were all from college campus testing sites and were identified in September — the state has now seen a total of 58,297 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic.
Also today, the state reported two additional coronavirus-related deaths. A total of 4,513 people have died with COVID-19 since March.
Connecticut now has 110 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, an increase of three over the previous day and the highest number of hospitalizations recorded since late June, the state reported.
CT Offers Trump Thoughts, Prayers, Criticism
Gov. Ned Lamont reacted cautiously today from both a political and public-health standpoint to President Donald J. Trump having COVID-19, news that brought uncertainty to the presidential campaign and spasms of sympathy, snark and schadenfreude.
The Democratic governor expressed concern about the president and first lady and offered no criticism of the routine disregard for public-health guidelines about social distancing, masks and other precautions by Trump, his family and his campaign.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Trump family,” Lamont said.
The president announced on Twitter at 1 a.m. that he and the first lady had tested positive for COVID-19. Two hours earlier, Trump said he would quarantine because his close aide, Hope Hicks of Greenwich, had tested positive for the infection.
