Westport’s Positive Directions, The Center for Prevention & Counseling announced today it has received funding to conduct another student/parent substance abuse survey in Westport. Image

Positive Directions has been conducting such periodic surveys in Westport since 2000.

“The $5,300 grant for the survey comes from Mid-Fairfield Substance Abuse Coalition, which has designated Positive Directions as its Local Prevention Council for the town of Westport, and we are very grateful for their support,” said Basil Hero, executive director.

The last student survey in Westport was done in 2014.  “We were encouraged that our 2014 survey of 7th-12th graders in Westport showed that underage drinking dropped across all grade levels well as marijuana use,” Hero said.

“But it is important to be as vigilant as possible in capturing the latest student data about what’s happening at this moment in our schools.”

Hero also announced that Cablevision/Optimum has started running 30-second public service television announcements as part of a drug awareness campaign from Positive Directions.

The campaign consists of real people who have lost family members to drug and alcohol addiction telling their stories. Among them is the student head at the Staples High School Teen Awareness Group (TAG).

Positive Directions said it will be working closely with Westport Human Services and the Superintendent of Schools’ office over the next few months to work on the survey and its timing for implementation.
