“Navigating the Economic Storm” Forum Set for Saturday

Westport Human Services Director Barbara Butler has announced that on Saturday the Community Support and Counseling Team, a group of community agencies that works with members of the Westport Emergency Management Committee, will sponsor a forum on “Navigating the Economic Storm.”

The panel presentations will be held in the McManus Room at the Westport Public Library from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Available throughout the event will be area resources concerning housing, financial and banking issues, career resources, volunteer and recreation opportunities to help residents deal with the new economic reality. Butler said.

Representatives from the financial sector will include local banking experts, the Connecticut Department of Banking, and the FBI who will discuss financial scams.

A light lunch will be served during the panel discussions.

The second panel will be moderated by a former financial executive who is currently a licensed therapist at St. Vincent’s Behavioral Health Center.

Also on the panel will be a licensed marriage and family clinician, a renowned Jungian analyst, and a pastoral counselor providing insights and recommendations about family communication especially with youth.

The Community Health Director from the Westport Weston Health District will conclude the presentation with nutrition and wellness information, stress reduction and resiliency strategies.

Information about insurance, local support groups for specific career areas, employment and training programs and individual, senior, family and youth summer recreation programs also will be available.

“We are offering this community forum for any residents concerned about the economy, seniors and the newly impacted unemployed,” said Butler.

“The idea for this event came from the belief that with good information and community support, a healthy perspective and resiliency can be achieved during these challenging financial times.

“We hope residents will leave this forum with a better knowledge of local resources and the people to contact for assistance.”
