She was born April 20, 1920, in Hoopeston, Ill. and was a graduate of Illinois State University.

She was a dedicated volunteer. One of her many accomplishments was founding the Alcoholism Guidance Center (later renamed the Alcoholism Council of Mid-Fairfield County) in Westport in 1971, where she served as executive director until her retirement.

Golfing was her passion and she was very proud of achieving four holes-in-one; the latest being at the age of 89. She loved to knit, as well as communicate with friends and family through email and making special occasion cards on her computer. Her favorite color was aqua, but her heart was made of gold.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years in 1990, Donald F. Fitzsimmons, and her brother, Robert Nash. She is survived by her family; son, Scott Fitzsimmons and daughter-in-law, Connie, of Tequesta; daughter, Joanne Fitzsimmons of Ormond Beach, Fla.; two grandchildren, Parker and Julianne Fitzsimmons of Tequesta, and sister-in-law, Eloise Campbell and her family.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation in Marie’s name to Hospice of Palm Beach County. A celebration of her life will take place later this month.
