Longtime RTM Member Irwin Donenfeld Dies

Irwin Donenfeld, a 22-year veteran of Westport’s Representative Town Meeting (RTM) who retired from the legislative body in 2003, died Monday night at Norwalk Hospital. He was 78 and had been in ill health for some time. First Selectwoman Diane G. Farrell called him “a true Westport treasure” and ordered town flags lowered in his honor. 1. Word fail to describe our sense of loss both for our community and his family. His efforts for all members of our community and particularly for those who provide municipal services was unending. He set an example for all of us to follow.

  2. Irwin was a true gentleman. He had a seemingly endless reserve of compassion for others. Irwin’s gracious and civil manner, in even the most difficult times, was inspirational. He will be sorely missed.

  3. If the RTM were to form an all-time, all-star team, Irwin would have to be one of the first picks. He had a deep core of compassion, integrity and committment to public service that was contagious. He was passionately dedicated to Westport’s children and their schools. For many of us he was a mentor. For all of us he will remain an inspiration.

  4. I will miss Irwin greatly. He was a friend and mentor. He was a leader and an advocate. Be it in the air flying with him or on the water boating with him, it was always a wonderful adventure. We spoke about our children and grandchildren and shared the pleasures. On the RTM he was simply the most fair and understanding and always kept Westport first. May he be at peace…..Stephen Rubin
