John C. Gage Jr., 81

John C. Gage, Jr., formerly of Westport,  died Thursday, July 24, 2008, due to complications from pancreatic cancer. He was 81.

Born Feb. 23, 1927, in Manchester, N.H., Mr. Gage was the son of the late John and Mary (Glady’s) Gage.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. Gage attended the University of New Hampshire and was a star football player, breaking the school rushing record in 1949 and holding it until 1973. Upon graduation, he moved to Connecticut working for the Connecticut Light and Power Company in Norwalk for 16 years and the Perkin Elmer Corporation in Wilton for 25 years.

During his tenure at Perkin Elmer, he managed the facilities department and a real estate portfolio of more than two million square feet.  As a corporate real estate professional, he was involved with many international organizations including SIOR, NACORE, and IDRC while serving as officer of many of the local chapters.

He was a doer and donated his time and project management talen to the City of Norwalk, Norwalk Hospital and the Saugatuck Church in Westport.

An avid golfer and sports enthusiast, Mr. Gage was married to his college sweetheart, Joanne Hall Gage for 51 years; residing 44 years and bringing up their two sons in Westport, beginning in 1955.

Mr. Gage is survived by his two sons, Jeffrey Gage of Newtown, and Kevin Gage of Weston, and numerous grandchildren, his sisters Beverly O’Connor and Geraldine Trowel and Brother Francis Gage all of Greenland, Hampshire, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Joanne on Oct. 22, 2004.

A memorial service is to be held at Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road East, on Saturday, Aug. 2 at 3 p.m.

  1. John Gage was, above all, a gentleman. As Director of Real Estate for Perkin Elmer, he had every commercial broker hoping to work for him on either searches or listings. John was always accessible, fair and straightforward
