Heavy Snow Wallops Westport and all of Northeast

Heavy Snow Wallops Westport and all of Northeast
So how bad was it as the snow began falling in Westport this afternoon?

It was so bad that nine cars ran off the road or were involved in accidents along Sturges Highway and Bayberry Lane near Meeker Road

It was so bad that it took one motorist an hour to move from the Kings Highway School on Post Road West to the Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Memorial Bridge a half mile away.

It was so bad that another motorist spent two hours going from the intersection of Compo Road and Post Road East to Stew Leonards in Norwalk.

It was so bad that the Merritt Parkway had to be shut down briefly near the North Avenue overpass because of a multi-vehicle accident that sent cars off the roadway and into the woods.

It was so bad that the police and fire departments held over shifts, put chains on their vehicles, and still had trouble getting to and keeping up with the accidents around town.

And this was only in the first few hours of the snowstorm that forecasters said would turn into blizzard conditions Saturday and Saturday evening with total accumulations expected to be between 10 and 15 inches.

The snow caused a 24-hour cancellation of SaturdayҒs Staples vs Shelton state championship football game. It now is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday in West Haven.

The Westport schools canceled all after school activities. The Bedford Middle School production of Oklahoma!Ӕ scheduled this weekend was postponed until some time in January.

The Westport Community Theatre canceled its evening performance, but the Westport Historical Society decided to go ahead with its Gingerbread Gala.Ӕ

The situation was much the same elsewhere in the state and the metropolitan area.

As of 4:30 p.m., 19 flights due into New York had been diverted to Bradley International Airport, said Rollin Tebbetts, the airport’s operations manager.
