Going Down: Peppermill Restaurant

WestportNow.com Image
The building at 1700 Post Road East, the former site of the Peppermill Restaurant, was undergoing demolition today. The 8,149-square-foot building built in 1925 was situated on a 1.48-acre property and purchased by Goodwill Industries of Western Connecticut in January for $3 million. A former Greyhound bus station in the 1940s, it was the WestportNow Teardown of the Day on July 30, 2007. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

  1. Shame on all of us Another Westport historic location goes into the dumpster.  I have seen the building on postcards filed under Westport at antique fairs and markets (next article on WN) It was a fond memory of years past as Peppermill.  It now joins buildings and open space that gave Westport it’s personality and special place in many hearts.  Just look at cities and towns that have saved their history, South Street Seaport, Faneuil Hall, Central Park, and in Westport buildings on Church Lane…. Westport historical and open locations can be saved with some effort by elected officials with creative financial and preservation forward thinking and by citizens waking up to the loss of our heritage.  Call me crazy,  I miss going to a movie downtown, I miss the old Victorians on our properties like Gorham Island, the open space along the Saugatuck and I will sorely miss Barons South after it is developed
