Friends and Colleagues Praise Retiring Police Chief
As news spread of Westport Police Chief William J. Chiarenzellis planned retirement, friends and colleagues praised the 38-year veteran and said he would be missed.

ғHe was always innovative and forward-thinking, said Irwin Donenfeld, who retired this year after 22 years on the Representative Town Meeting (RTM), most of them as head of the bodyԒs Public Protection Committee.

Donenfeld is a longtime friend of Chiarenzellis and worked closely with him on public safety initiatives as well as steering the police and fire budgets through the RTM.

ғHe had a cooperative spirit with our surrounding communities and was always aware of our citizen and town needs, Donenfeld said. ԓHe will be missed.

Fire Chief Denis McCarthy said, ԓAs chief, he has been proactive and creative in leading his department and the community to deal with significant challenges of a changing society.

Because of his efforts, Chief Chiarenzelli has created a safer, more secure community.

ӓIf the test of a good department head is that you leave the organization better than you find it, Chief Chiarenzelli has been a great public safety official.

In an Order of the Day to his officers, Chiarenzelli wrote: ԓI wish each of you the best in the future. I ask that you continue to pursue your professional duties with vigor and excellence, which will enhance our proud tradition.
