Don Thompson, 88

Don Thompson of Durham, New Hampshire, a former part-time Westport resident, died Feb. 17 from pneumonia. He was 88.

Owner and founder of Don L. Thompson Real Estate, he lived in Durham, for more than 50 years and was a well known and respected businessman in the Durham area.

Born in Greenwich, he graduated from University of Connecticut. He was a decorated Air Force pilot who served in Korea and Vietnam as a fighter pilot and then flew KC-135 tankers out of Pease AFB, New Hampshire. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross.

He spent childhood summers in Compo Cove in Westport. Later in life, he spent each March in Rancho Mirage, California. His favorite place of all was Hidden Lake, West Newfield, Maine where he would kayak with his dog or sail.

But he most enjoyed spending time with his family. He played tennis and golf regularly into his early 80s.

He lost his wife, Joan, last May after 60 years of marriage. He is survived by his children Tracey McGonagle and her husband Paul of Marblehead, Massahusetts, Leslie Thompson of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Robin Thompson of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; also by three grandchildren, Kathryn, Paige and Colton, cousin Schuyler Cummings, Tampa, Florida.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday, March 1 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter Road, Newmarket, New Hampshire.
