Closing the Door on 75 Years of Postal History Image
The Westport Main Post Office on Post Road East closed its doors for the last time today. The building site, purchased by the U.S. Postal Service in 1933 for $35,000 from Harry and Edna Sherwood, was sold in May for $2.35 million to an investor group which hopes to turn it into retail or restaurant. The Post Office, which opened in 1936, is moving to much smaller space in Playhouse Square just up the street on Post Road East. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for
