Today’s Westport Historical Society (WHS) program honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. Day included a presentation, “Early Days of the Civil Rights Movement,” by Wilton resident Jeffrey Miller, a retired U.S. Justice Department civil rights lawyer involved in enforcing the Civil Rights Act. He said his first assignment after joining the department in 1964 was Alabama.“I investigated areas that included educated blacks who were denied voting rights and systematically categorized as illiterate,” he said.
