Bernard C. Pelzel, 97

Bernard C. Pelzel of Furlong, Pa., a former estate manager for the late Westporter Arnold Bernhard, died March 27. He was 97.

The son of Clement and Augusta (Engel) Pelzel, he was born in 1916 in Sleepy Eye, Minn. He served as a medic and ambulance driver in the 306th Bombardment Group of the Army Air Corp while stationed in England during World War II. 

Once back in the United States, he drove a truck cross country, worked in an airplane propeller factory, and obtained his pilot’s license. 

He then became the property manager for the 16.4-acre estate of the late Arnold Bernhard on Sylvan Lane North in Westport, a position he held for the next 33 years.

Bernhard, the founder and chief executive officer of Value Line Inc., an investment advisory service, died in 1987 at the age of 86.

Pelzel and his wife, Marjo, retired to Vermont, Maine, and then to Furlong, Pa. He loved to tinker in his garage and was able to fix anything, his family said.

His favorite activity was driving his motor home on various trips across the country. He enjoyed riding his motorcycles, gardening, as well as spending time with his children and grandchildren. 

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marjo (nee Groot). He was father of Audrey, Kenneth, Ronald (Liz), Richard (the late Samara) Pelzel, and Wendela (Dr. Mark) Lund. Also survivng are grandchildren Eleanor and Ryan, Quintin and Carter, Harrison and Spencer; brother Melvin Pelzel, sister Lorraine Tauer, and brother–in-law Frank Muller. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. 

He was predeceased by his parents and nine siblings, Roman, Edward, Arthur, Erwin, Leo, Leona, Irene, Lucille, and Marion. 

Relatives and friends are invited to his Life Celebration Wednesday, April 3, at 10 a.m. at the Doylestown United Methodist Church, 320 E. Swamp Road, Doylestown, Pa. Funeral Service to follow at 11 a.m. Interment at Washington Crossing National Cemetery.
