Barbara Butler, director of the Department of Human Services, said the program begins Monday, Aug. 6 and runs through the following Monday.
“This program offers new backpacks and school supplies as well as Athletic Shoe Factory and Payless gift cards to income-eligible families with children in Westport,” said Butler.
“The Back to School Program depends solely upon the generosity of community individuals and organizations,” she said
Last year, 213 Westport students from 109 income-eligible families received back to school supplies as well as Payless gift cards for a new pair of school shoes. In this economy participation is expected to grow even greater, Butler said.
“Donations at any level are greatly appreciated,” she said.
The Department of Human Services also accepts tax-deductible monetary donations made payable to Town of Westport/DHS Family Programs (memo: backpacks), and mailed to the Westport Department of Human Services, 110 Myrtle Ave., Westport, CT 06880.
Donations of new school supplies of all types, including backpacks (the larger the better), may be dropped off Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in Room 200 of the Westport Town Hall.
Families who feel they may qualify for this program are urged to contact the Department of Human Services. Contact Patty Haberstroh at (203)341-1069 or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) with questions.
