These Purple Martin nestlings were found during a recent check of the Purple Martin gourd housing near the Nature Center at Sherwood Island State Park. “Purple Martins are a reality at the Park due to the help, support, and generosity of Milan Bull, senior director of science and conservation at the Connecticut Audubon Society,” said Tina Green of Westport, an avid bird watcher, who found the nestlings. The Spotted Horse Tavern, 26 Church Lane, across from the Family Y, is today’s featured spot in our WestportNow series, Westport Outdoors, highlighting popular spots where Westporters gather to eat, play, or relax during the warm-weather months. The Spotted Horse Tavern, which opened in March 2012, offers outdoor seating and serves its full menu from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Located in the preserved and renovated 1802 federal-style Sherwood House, the restaurant is owned by Kevin McHugh and Tommy Febbraio, both Staples High School graduates who operate the popular Gray Goose Café in Southport.
