Storm Causes Flooding, Power Outages

Heavy overnight rains caused flooding on local roadways, police said.

The railroad underpass on Compo Road South was flooded and closed to traffic, police said shortly before 6 a.m.

Additional flooding was reported on Post Road East at Morningside Drive North. A light pole fell in Parker Harding Plaza.

Connecticut Power and Light said five customers were without power at 10:40 a.m. Cablevision also reported outages.

Westport Firefighters Fight Fire in Weston

UPDATE Westport firefighters early today joined Weston firefighters in battling a basement blaze just over the Westport town line in Weston.

The fire broke out at 28 Arlen Lane off of North Avenue at about 6:30 a.m. It was reported knocked down 20 minutes later.

Reports from the scene said no one was in the house when the flames erupted.

Heavy rain was falling at the time.

Flash Flood Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Westport and area until 9:30 a.m. today.

It said shortly before 6 a.m. that up to 3 inches of rain had fallen in parts of the area and another 1 to 2 inches of rain are possible this morning.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, highways and underpasses, the Weather Service said.

Additionally, country roads and farmlands along the banks of creeks, streams and other low lying areas are subject to flooding, it said.

Multi-Vehicle I-95 Crash Sends 10 to Hospital

An accident early today involving a jackknifed tractor-trailer and five cars on the I-95 bridge southbound over the Saugatuck River sent 10 persons to Norwalk Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, fire officials said. Tractor-Trailer Accident Closes I-95 Southbound

UPDATE An accident involving a jackknifed tractor-trailer and five other cars early today on the I-95 bridge over the Saugatuck River southbound caused multiple injuries and shut down the roadway, fire officials said.

The accident occurred at about 1:25 a.m. and the roadway was reopened about 90 minutes later.

Ten patients were transported to Norwalk Hospital for treatment with non-life threatening injuries and another nine involved in the accident refused medical treatment, said Westport Fire Assistant Chief John Plofkin, Jr.

He said arriving firefighters found a jackknifed tractor-trailer blocking the high speed and center lanes with five other motor vehicles involved.
