The Friends of Sherwood Island State park tonight honored Westport First Selectman Gordon Joseloff with its True Friend award at its 15th annual Shorefest Dinner at the park, which also honored the 100th birthday of the state park system. Comings & Goings: Kidville opens Sept. 15 Image
Kidville, 1572 Post Road East, dedicated to children’s activities and located in the former location of Goodwill Industries, opens on Sept. 15 with an open house celebration for the public from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., according to owners Rob and Valerie Gutman. Flood Issues to Be Discussed at Monday Meeting

The Town of Westport will host an informational meeting about flooding on Monday at 6 p.m. in the Town Hall auditorium.

Special guest will be Deputy State Hazard Mitigation Officer Gemma Fabris of the Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, according to a Fire Department announcement.

Homeowners who are interested in elevating their homes and have been affected by severe flooding during Hurricane Sandy or have suffered repetitive loss from prior storms should attend, the announcement said.

There will be a question and answer period to address any concerns residents may have.

Groundbreaking Sunday to Mark Church Rebuilding

Work is under way on rebuilding Westport’s Saugatuck Congregational Church after its devastating fire in November 2011 and a groundbreaking will be held Sunday 1 p.m. to mark the occasion. Image

The church said the first stage of work involves removal of plaster and materials damaged by water and smoke as well as restoration of pews in the sanctuary.

“Construction is projected to begin in six to eight weeks and to be completed in the fall of 2014,” the church said in an announcement.

The official groundbreaking ceremony will be held in the Memorial Garden on the church grounds following the church’s Welcome Sunday 11 a.m. worship service and picnic.
