A small fire broke out on Dec. 26, 2010 in fireplace ashes left in the mud room of a home at 82 Hillspoint Road, the Westport Fire Department said. (See WestportNow Dec. 26, 2010)

The homeowners managed to douse the flames with a portable fire extinguisher before firefighters arrived, said Assistant Chief Robert Kepchar.

He said the homeowners stated that they had taken the ashes from the fireplace the day before, Christmas evening, and placed them in a bag and a cardboard box and put them in the mud room.

Working to Improve Retaining Wall Image
Work was under way today on Westport’s Compo Road South at Narrow Rocks Road on a retaining wall there. According to a supervisor on site, because of a deteriorating section of the retaining wall, it is being replaced with an architecturally concrete wall tooled to match the adjacent ledge “with esthetic consistency.”  He said the work would be completed by the end of the week and the final stage of the reconstruction will be scheduled for next spring. The troop will pick up trees on Saturday, Jan. 7. To arrange a pickup – with a requested $15 donation – residents must reserve on line and take the tree to the end of your driveway near the mailbox the night before.

The funds collected go toward Boy Scout Troop 39’s character-building activities, such as food drives, community service projects, and high adventure backpacking trips, an announcement said.

Reservations are being accepted now, online at “Sign up, tape your donation in cash or check (made out to Boy Scout Troop 39) to your front door and have your tree down at the end of your driveway no later than 6:30 a.m.,” the announcement said.
