P&Z Hears Big Plans for Two Shuttered Properties

By James Lomuscio

Westport’s Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) tonight heard plans to revitalize two shuttered businesses—National Hall on Post Road West and the old Curran Cadillac property on Post Road East.WestportNow.com Image

Both presentations were pre-application hearings in which the applicants presented their plans in the hopes of getting P&Z input to guide them as they pursue the zoning process.

William Fitzpatrick, a Fairfield lawyer representing Greenfield Partners, described plans to revamp the National Hall property in the Historic Design District (HDD).

It would include a glass-enclosed addition for use as office space at 8 Post Road West, retail space including a bakery at the old Vigilante firehouse, space for a Westport Arts Center gallery, and the construction of a third parking deck across the street.

‘No Profanity if You Are … From Westport’

UPDATE London’s Daily Mail newspaper—as well as many other publications—is taking note of a YouTube video (now removed but available here and reposted on YouTube here) in which it says a young woman on a Metro-North train shows “a bad case of superiority complex.”WestportNow.com Image

And it quotes the person who made the video as saying the incident ended with a public address announcement asking all passengers to please not use profanity on the train—“especially those people who went to Harvard or Yale or are from Westport.”

The newspaper said the incident involved someone talking loudly on the train “about how intelligent they are.” YouTube posters identified her as a graduate of NYU, and Metro-North said she boarded the New York-bound train in Westport on Tuesday at 10:46 p.m.

“Captured on a cellphone by a fellow passenger on a New York area train is a commuter straight out of the ‘do you know who I am?’ school,” the Daily Mail said.

P&Z ‘Lets There Be Light’ at Temple Israel

By James Lomuscio

Westport’s Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) voted unanimously tonight to allow Temple Israel on Coleytown Road to install more than 30 10-foot high lights posts in its rear parking lot, providing the lights have electronically controlled shutoff timers.

Temple officials have wanted to install the lights for several years, as many as 34, because the back, unpaved parking area has a rough terrain that can be precarious when unlit.

“We have had members of our congregation fall in that parking lot,” said Rabbi Robert Orkand told the P&Z back in April. “What kind of injuries do our people have to endure before you believe the lighting is unsafe?”

That request, however, had been opposed by neighbors, one of them a temple congregant, who had complained about the possibility light trespass onto their properties throughout the night.
