Metro-North: Expect Delays

Metro-North said customers traveling on the New Haven Line should expect delays of up to 10-15 minutes due to crowded trains and weather-related severe and continuing equipment shortages.

Schools Open at Normal Times

The Westport Public Schools are opening at normal times today.

Winter Storm Warning: 5-10 Inches of Snow, Sleet Anticipated

The National Weather Service in Upton, N.Y. said a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Westport and area until 7 p.m. Wednesday.

It said heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain can be expected with 5 to 10 inches of snow and sleet accmulaton and ¼ to ½ of an inch of ice accumulation by late Wednesday.

It said the highest snow amounts will occur across interior portions of Connecticut and the lower Hudson Valley. The highest ice amounts will be across interior northeast New Jersey and the lower Hudson Valley.

There will be snow this morning, transitioning to a wintry mix late this morning and this afternoon from south to north before becoming a period of freezing drizzle and light sleet this evening.

“Cuba 2010” Photo Exhibit Opening Friday at Library

The Westport Public Library is readying a new exhibit, “Cuba 2010, an Impression: Photographs by David Kalman,” opening Friday. And today Leonard Everett Fisher (l) and Neil Hardy were busy hanging the exhibits. Kalman is president of David Kalman LLC, a food broker for Newman’s Own Food service, Sabrett Hot Dogs and Alle Processing to Sysco in Houston, Texas. While traveling around the world for business, he has pursued his serious avocation for photography for more than 30 years. His work has been shown in many local venues and has earned plaudits and prizes. Board of Ed Approves 2.36% Budget Increase for 2011-12

UPDATE The Westport Board of Education tonight unanimously approved a more than $98.34 million operating budget for the 2011-2012 year—a $2.26 million increase—that will now head to the Board of Finance.

The proposed budget, which represents a 2.36 percent increase over this year, is $415,417 less than the $98.76 million that Schools Superintendent Elliott Landon had originally proposed.

The board trimmed Landon’s initial request by eliminating two staff positions to save $116,000, saving $114,000 on health and medical insurance, and by allocating electricity and technology costs totaling $185,417 to Continuing Education.

The board agreed to the new budget after eight separate line item votes of 7 to 0 on salaries, benefits, supplies, equipment, property and purchase services.

Norwalk Debuts Electric Vehicle Charging Station

Westport officials, including First Selectman Gordon Joseloff (r), and several residents were on hand in Norwalk today as Mayor Dick Moccia (l) dedicated Fairfield Country’s first electric vehicle charging station at the Metro-North South Norwalk station. Joseloff congratulated Moccia and said Westport’s plans are advancing for electric charging stations at its Metro-North Westport station, With them is state Rep. Gail Lavielle (R-143), who represents part of Wilton and Norwalk and sits on the General Assembly’s Transportation Committee. The orange car behind them is a Tesla Roadster belonging to an employee of a Westport firm which was the first highway-capable all-electric vehicle in serial production available in the United States. The other cars are Chevrolet Volts, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle manufactured by the Chevrolet division of General Motors, which went on sale last month. The charging station was installed by Miami-based Car Charging Group, Inc. which provides electric vehicle charging stations at no charge to property owners/managers while retaining ownership and sharing a portion of revenues generated. WestportNow Teardown of the Day: 16 Hilltop Trail

An application for a permit to demolish the house at Westport’s 16 Hilltop Trail, off Morningside Drive South, is in process. Built in 1960, the one-story ranch has 1,035 square feet and is situated on a .26-acre property.
