Sunrise Rotary Donates to Food Closets

The Westport Sunrise Rotary Club food drive on Saturday resulted in 197 bags of food delivered to the Norwalk Open Door Shelter and the Westport Woman’s Club Food Closet.WestportNow.com Image

The drive was held at the Super Stop & Shop on Post Road East. Club members asked shoppers entering the store to add one or more nonperishable items to their shopping lists and drop donations off on their way out. 

Shoppers responded generously, leaving 197 bags of canned fruits and vegetables, cereal, rice and pasta, and paper goods and other food preparation disposables.

“We thank everyone who supported this drive,” said George Masumian, who heads the club’s food drive program.

“Fresh” Soup and a Movie

At the Unitarian Church in Westport tonight more than 70 people came in from the cold to enjoy fresh homemade soup and a free screening of the movie “Fresh,” a film that celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are helping create a sustainable food system. The winners at today’s 11th annual Westport Public Library crossword puzzle contest posed with New York Times puzzle editor Will Shortz (2nd l).
