Westport to Honor Paul Newman With Nature Preserve

UPDATE The Town of Westport is proposing zoning changes that would create a 37-acre nature preserve honoring Paul Newman on town-owned land adjacent to the late actor’s Westport home. Image

Westport First Selectman Gordon F. Joseloff said the changes would affect a 7.5-acre parcel the Newman family donated to the town in 1997 and a 29.9-acre adjacent parcel the town acquired at the same time from the Poses family for $3.75 million.

“The preservation of this property as the ‘Newman/Poses Preserve’ is in keeping with his family’s wishes and will serve as a tribute to honor his memory,” Joseloff said in a letter to the Planning & Zoning Commission.

The commission originally scheduled a review of the requested zoning changes at its May 14 meeting but later postponed it until June 4, said Planning and Zoning Director Laurence Bradley.

A Protest in Art Image
The Friends of the Westport Center for Senior Activities presented Westport artist Estelle Margolis today in another in its “Conversations with the Artists” series. Among her works Margolis showed was one done in the late 1980s when she used her voice and paints in protest. “This painting was my message to Jesse Helms when he was going to destroy the National Endowment for the Arts,” she said.
