Westporters Have Choice of Inauguration Viewing

UPDATE Westporters who want company watching Tuesday’s noon inauguration of Barack Obama as president have a choice of venues.

Westport Town Hall has scheduled a large screen viewing in the auditorium for employees and visitors.

The Westport Library will have a viewing on a big screen in the McManus Room and invites Westporters to enjoy some light refreshments beginning at 11 a.m.

The Westport Center for Senior Activities will be watching on its large screen as well starting at 11.a.m. Lunch will be served at noon. Reservations are required if you are interested in lunch and can be made by calling the Center at 341-5099.

Rell Names Westporter to Advisory Panel

Gov. M. Jodi Rell today announced she has appointed Nitzy Cohen of Westport to the Advisory Committee on Connecticut’s Technical High Schools.

The committee identifies emerging state and national workforce needs and trade technology programs for the technical high school system. It also works to ensure that all students who graduate from the system have communication, leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills and expertise in a trade technology.

Cohen, owner of Westport-based International Basics, LLC, a food exporting company, was the unsuccessful Republican challenger in November to incumbent Democrat Representative Joe Mioli, who represents Westport in the 136th District.

“Nitzy’s experience in the business world will make her an invaluable member of this panel and help our state to grow jobs,” Rell said. “I thank her for her willingness to serve the State of Connecticut.”

Fire Safety Tips for Seniors

Westport Fire Chief Christopher Ackley visited the Westport Center for Senior Activities today to discuss safety tips and heating hazards of the winter season. He said statistics show senior citizens are especially vulnerable to home fire accidents. Car into a Building on Post Road East

A vehicle slammed into a storefront at 240 Post Road East in the Colonial Green shopping plaza around noon today.  The Westport female driver said the vehicle “jumped” when she hit the gas. The store’s plate glass window was broken, but there was no structural damage to the building, Assistant Fire Chief Robert Kepchar said. There was moderate damage to the car but no injuries.
