Water Problems Keep Westport Firefighters Busy

Westport firefighters were kept busy throughout the weekend responding to activated fire alarms caused by water leaks and requests for assistance, the Fire Department said tonight.

Today’s above freezing temperatures provided the opportunity for water frozen in pipes during the recent spell of bitter cold weather to thaw, leak, activate fire alarm systems, and cause damage in several homes and commercial buildings, said Assistant Chief Gene Maloney.

Among those suffering damage from burst pipes today was the Westport Country Playhouse, he said

At about 4:20 p.m. the department responded to an activated fire alarm system at the Playhouse and found water flowing through the ceiling, down an unheated interior staircase, and into the main lobby of the building, Maloney said.
