Paying Tribute
Howard Munce, grand mashal of today’s Westport Memorial Day parade, paid tribute to the statue of the World War I doughboy during his remarks on Veterans Green. He said he was glad it eventually ended up here after years ago being on a median on Post Road East and tipped his hat toward it in salute. Westport Fire Chief Christopher Ackley addressed today’s morning Memorial Day ceremony at Westport fire headquarters. He said the department is stronger and citizens safer as a result of additional firefighters added to the ranks over the past two years. Memorial Day 2008 Parade Kicks Off at 9 a.m.
Westport’s annual Memorial Day parade kicks off today shortly after 9 a.m. with hundreds expected to participate.
The line of march runs from Riverside Avenue in front of Saugatuck Elementary School, across the Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge, up Post Road East to Myrtle Avenue, and then along Myrtle to Veterans Green.
World War II veteran and noted artist Howard Munce is grand marshal for the parade. There will be a reviewing stand in front of Town Hall, and ceremonies will take place across the street on Veterans Green following the parade.
Before the parade, there will be a Kiwanis Club pancake breakfast beginning at 7 a.m. at Christ and Holy Trinity Church, 75 Church Lane. At 8 a.m., there will be a Westport Fire Department ceremony at its headquarters, 515 Post Road East.
