Winter Weather Advisory in Effect

The winter weather advisory is now in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Upton, N.Y.

Steady light freezing rain, freezing drizzle, and occasional sleet was winding down as of 11:30 p.m., an advisory said.

Another area of light showers of snow and sleet over central Pennsylvania should overspread the New York City metropolitan area, Long Island, and coastal Connecticut after midnight with additional accumulation of less than an inch expected.

This plus icing from the earlier freezing rain should make for continued hazardous travel conditions overnight.

Saturday’s forecast called for a chance of snow in the morning then a slight chance of rain or snow in the afternoon with highs in the mid-30s. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Snow Causes Slippery Roads, Accidents

Soon after the snow began falling early today, numerous spin outs and accidents were reported on I-95, the Merritt Parkway, and local Westport roadways.

The Westport Fire Department responded to a two-vehicle accident on I-95 southbound between Exits 19 and 18 shortly before 3 a.m.

The accident involved a sedan and a pickup truck which had rolled onto its side, said Assistant Chief Larry Conklin. All occupants were out of the vehicle upon arrival.

Three persons in the pickup truck were transported to Norwalk Hospital as a precautionary measure to be checked for injuries, Conklin said.
