Heavy rains flooded some local roadways today as the National Weather Service issued a flood watch for portions of southern Connecticut and southeast New York, including the Westport area.
The watch is in effect until 8 p.m.
“Heavy rain continues to fall or will begin falling shortly across the watch area,” a statement said at 9:24 a.m. “Portions of Long Island and Connecticut have received anywhere from 2 to 3 inches of rainfall so far.”
The weather station at Bedford Middle School measured more than 4.5 inches of rain by 1:30 p.m. since midnight.
A 1-year-old infant died and several persons were injured today when their car went off the southbound lane of the Merritt Parkway in Westport near the Easton Road overpass and struck a tree during heavy rain. Westport firefighters had to extricate one of the victims from the car. The baby, later identified as Mariam Geevarghese of Shelton, was transported to Norwalk Hospital where she was later pronounced dead. In addition to state police and four Westport fire vehicles on the scene, Westport EMS used two ambulances to treat and transport the injured, and a Westport police unit also carried a passenger to Norwalk Hospital. The accident shortly before 8 a.m. shut down the roadway for about an hour. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) WestportNow.com photo
